Loongson releases the first independent architecture CPU, performance soars by 50%

Recently, Loongson Zhongke announced the official release of the Loongson 3A5000 processor. This product is the first processor chip that uses the autonomous command system LoongArch, and its performance has achieved a significant leap. This product also represents my country's latest milestone result in the field of independent CPU design.

It is worth noting that the Loongson 3A5000 is also the first processor chip to use the LoongArch instruction set, and the chip code is "KMYC70" to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the War of Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

Loongson's long arch instruction set is a self-sufficiently developed instruction set by Loongson, which has higher operating efficiency. Compiling the same source code into LoongArch can reduce the number of dynamic execution instructions by an average of 10%-20% compared to the MIPS previously supported by Loongson.

At the same time, it achieves compatibility based on BT translation, including for BIOS, kernel, compiler and assembler, and applications. LoongArch natively comes with 128 and 256-bit vector instruction sets. At the same time, processors using the long arch instruction set have vector instruction functions ( That is, the 128bit vector expands 1024, etc.).

Specific to the Loongson 3A5000, the processor has a main frequency of 2.3GHz-2.5GHz and contains four processor cores, each of which uses a 64-bit superscalar GS464V autonomous microstructure, including 4 fixed-point units and 2 256 Bit vector operation units, and 2 memory fetching units.

In addition, the Loongson 3A5000 also integrates two 64-bit DDR4-3200 controllers that support ECC verification and four HyperTransport 3.0 controllers that support multi-processor data consistency. The main module clock is dynamically closed, the main clock domain dynamic frequency conversion, and the main voltage domain dynamic voltage regulation and other refined power management functions.

In the performance test, a third-party organization test showed that the fixed-point and floating-point single-core Base scores of the Loongson 3A5000 processor running SPEC CPU2006 under the GCC compilation environment reached 26 points or more, and the quad-core score reached 80 points or more. The Unixbench single-thread score of the Loongson 3A5000 desktop system based on the domestic operating system is more than 1700 points, and the four-thread score is more than 4200 points. This score is not far from the level of mainstream desktop CPUs in the market, maintaining a leading position among domestic CPUs.

According to Loongson's official statement, with the previous generation processor 3A4000 processor, 3A5000 processor, on the basis of maintaining pin compatibility, has improved performance by more than 50% and reduced power consumption by more than 30%.

Same as the purpose of the Loongarch instruction set to release before, the release of the Loongson 3A5000 processor signifies that the domestic CPU field can achieve a level that is not bad.

The biggest significance of the release of these products is that they are independent and controllable, ensuring safety in key areas, and also incubating a large number of talents in the domestic chip field.

Of course, it needs to be viewed dialectically. Although the 3A5000 processor is the strongest among domestic CPUs and surpasses most of the CPU products that use imported technology, it is compared with the desktop and server products of top manufacturers, such as Intel and AMD. There is still a big gap.

But at least the company has taken this step, and the current domestic market is large enough to provide the living soil for the Godson CPU. The so-called best CPU will always be the next one. I believe that Godson will provide better products in the future. After all, the most difficult stage from 0 to 1 has been bought, and the next step from 1 to 100 is just the accumulation of time.

However, at present, the biggest shortcoming of Godson in China lies in the software ecology, and there is no video encoding and decoding IP, and no artificial intelligence neural network IP, but this is not something that Godson can complete.

Here is a hypothesis that there is exactly one company in China that has restricted the production of chips by the United States, but they have a rich software ecosystem and an independent system, and Godson happens to have a CPU with an independent instruction set. The combination of the two may happen. Wonderful chemical reaction.
